Reflective Insulation: Definition and What it is

What is Reflective Insulation?

Reflective insulation uses highly reflective materials (aluminum foil or metallized films) to reduce radiant heat transfer. Unlike mass insulation that slows conductive heat flow, reflective insulation reflects radiant energy away from living spaces, making it particularly effective in hot climates.

Reflective insulation products range from simple foil-faced bubble wrap to sophisticated multi-layer systems with air spaces. The key to effectiveness is the reflective surface facing an air space—reflection only works across air gaps, not when pressed against other materials. Some products combine reflective layers with traditional insulation materials for dual benefits. Reflective insulation reduces radiant heat gain in summer and radiant heat loss in winter, though summer cooling benefits dominate in most applications.

Effective Use of Reflective Insulation

Reflective insulation works best in applications where radiant heat transfer dominates—metal buildings, garage doors, attic spaces, and walls in hot climates. Always install with at least a 3/4-inch air space facing the reflective surface for effectiveness. In cold climates, reflective insulation provides minimal benefit since conductive heat loss is the primary concern. Use reflective insulation to supplement, not replace, traditional mass insulation. It's ideal for space-constrained applications where high R-values aren't achievable with traditional materials.
