Radiant Barrier Insulation: Definition and What it is

Reflective insulation that blocks radiant heat transfer, typically installed in attics.

What is Radiant Barrier Insulation?

Radiant barriers are reflective materials (typically aluminum foil) that block radiant heat transfer, reducing cooling costs in hot climates. Unlike traditional insulation that slows conductive heat transfer, radiant barriers reflect up to 97% of radiant heat away from living spaces.

Radiant barriers work by reflecting radiant heat rather than absorbing it. When the sun heats your roof, radiant energy transfers to the attic space and radiates downward. A radiant barrier installed on the attic floor or under the roof decking reflects this heat back, keeping attics 20-30°F cooler. This reduces the cooling load on your air conditioner and improves comfort. Radiant barriers are most effective in hot, sunny climates and when combined with adequate traditional insulation.

Radiant Barrier Installation Methods

  • Attic Floor Application: Reflective material laid over existing insulation, easiest DIY installation
  • Roof Deck Application: Attached to underside of roof decking, most effective but requires professional installation
  • Draped Installation: Hung from rafters with air space on both sides for maximum effectiveness
  • Foil-Faced Sheathing: Radiant barrier integrated into roof sheathing during construction

When Radiant Barriers Make Sense

Radiant barriers provide the most benefit in hot, sunny climates (southern US) where cooling costs dominate. They're less effective in cold climates where heating is the primary concern. Install radiant barriers in addition to, not instead of, traditional insulation—you need both for optimal performance. Ensure proper attic ventilation to prevent moisture issues. The radiant surface must face an air space to be effective. In hot climates, radiant barriers can reduce cooling costs by 5-10% when properly installed with adequate conventional insulation.

Benefits of Radiant Barrier Insulation

  • Reduce attic temperatures by 20-30°F in summer
  • Lower cooling costs by 5-10% in hot climates
  • Improve comfort in rooms below attic
  • Relatively affordable compared to insulation upgrades
  • Easy DIY installation for attic floor application
  • Works year-round by reflecting heat in summer, retaining warmth in winter

Radiant Barrier Insulation Cost

Radiant barriers offer good cost-effectiveness in appropriate climates with quick payback periods.

  • DIY attic floor installation ($0.25-$0.50/sq ft materials)
  • Professional roof deck installation ($0.50-$1.50/sq ft)
  • Attic size and accessibility
  • Material quality (single vs. double-sided, reinforced)
  • Regional labor rates
  • Combined installation with other attic work
