Vacuum Insulated Panels: Definition and What it is
Advanced insulation technology with extremely high R-value using vacuum-sealed panels.
What is Vacuum Insulated Panels?
Vacuum Insulated Panels (VIPs) are advanced insulation products that achieve exceptional thermal performance—R-30 to R-50 per inch—by creating a vacuum within a rigid panel. This eliminates convective and conductive heat transfer, leaving only minimal radiative transfer.
VIPs consist of a rigid core material (typically fumed silica or aerogel) enclosed in an air-tight, metallized film barrier with the air evacuated to create a vacuum. The vacuum eliminates the primary mechanisms of heat transfer. At just 1 inch thick, VIPs can match the performance of 6-10 inches of conventional insulation. However, VIPs are fragile—any puncture allows air infiltration and destroys insulating performance. They're used where space is extremely limited and cost is secondary to performance.
VIP Applications
- Appliances: Refrigerators, freezers, and vending machines (most common use)
- Building Retrofits: Historic buildings where interior space is constrained
- Passive House Construction: Ultra-high-performance homes targeting minimal energy use
- Cold Chain Logistics: Shipping containers requiring minimal insulation thickness
- Specialty Applications: Clean rooms, laboratories, and space-constrained commercial uses
When to Consider VIPs
VIPs make sense when space is extremely limited and budget is flexible. They're ideal for interior retrofits where thicker conventional insulation would reduce room size unacceptably. VIPs require careful handling and protection during installation—typically installed behind rigid protective layers. Plan for thermal bridging at panel edges and joints. Consider that damaged panels lose performance permanently with no visual indication. VIPs work best in controlled applications with minimal risk of puncture.
Benefits of Vacuum Insulated Panels
- Highest R-value per inch available (R-30 to R-50)
- Enable insulation in space-constrained applications
- Allow historic building upgrades without altering appearance
- Achieve passive house standards with minimal wall thickness
- No off-gassing or VOC emissions
- Long lifespan (20-50 years) if undamaged
- Enable ultra-efficient design in commercial and residential applications
Vacuum Insulated Panels Cost
VIPs are the most expensive insulation option, typically reserved for specialized applications where conventional options won't work.
- Material cost: $15-$40 per square foot (10-20x conventional insulation)
- Custom sizing and cutting (panels cannot be field-cut)
- Protective installation requirements
- Limited supplier availability
- Premium for residential vs. commercial/industrial volumes
- Justified when space savings are critical or energy targets demand maximum performance
