Crawl Space Insulation: Step-by-Step How-To Guide

Comprehensive instructions for Foam Board, Spray Foam, Batt & Roll, and Vapor Barrier installations with moisture control strategies.

Before You Start

  • Wear PPE: gloves, long sleeves, eye protection, and a respirator or dust mask.
  • Check for moisture issues, standing water, or mold before insulating.
  • Ensure proper ventilation and drainage in the crawl space.
  • Seal all air leaks from the living space above.
  • Install vapor barrier on the ground before insulating walls.
  • Check for electrical wiring and plumbing before drilling.
  • Consider hiring professionals for spray foam installation.

Foam Board Installation

Best for crawl space walls. Provides excellent moisture resistance and R-value. Use extruded polystyrene (XPS) or polyisocyanurate foam.

  1. Clean crawl space walls and remove any debris or loose material.
  2. Choose foam board thickness: 2" (R-10) or 3" (R-15) for adequate insulation.
  3. Cut foam boards to fit between floor joists using a utility knife.
  4. Apply construction adhesive to the back of foam boards.
  5. Press foam boards firmly against crawl space walls.
  6. Seal all joints between foam boards with foil tape or caulk.
  7. Install foam boards from the ground up to the floor joists.
  8. Seal gaps around pipes, wires, and other penetrations.

Spray Foam Insulation

Professional-grade insulation that seals air leaks and provides excellent moisture resistance. Best for irregular spaces and air sealing.

  1. Hire a licensed spray foam contractor for proper installation.
  2. Choose closed-cell spray foam for moisture resistance (R-6 per inch).
  3. Ensure proper ventilation during application - foam releases gases.
  4. Contractor will apply foam to crawl space walls and rim joists.
  5. Foam expands to fill gaps and seal air leaks completely.
  6. Allow foam to cure completely before covering.
  7. Trim excess foam flush with surfaces using a saw.
  8. Install vapor barrier over cured foam if required by local code.

Batts & Rolls Installation

Most economical option for crawl space floors. Install between floor joists to prevent cold air from entering living space above.

  1. Measure joist spacing (typically 16" or 24" on center).
  2. Use unfaced fiberglass batts to avoid moisture trapping.
  3. Cut batts to fit snugly between floor joists.
  4. Install batts with paper facing toward the living space above.
  5. Support batts with wire mesh or netting to prevent sagging.
  6. Seal gaps around pipes and wires with small pieces of insulation.
  7. Install vapor barrier over insulation facing the crawl space.
  8. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent moisture buildup.

Vapor Barrier Installation

Essential for moisture control. Install 6-mil polyethylene sheeting on the ground to prevent soil moisture from entering the crawl space.

  1. Clean crawl space floor and remove debris, rocks, and sharp objects.
  2. Purchase 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier sheeting.
  3. Overlap sheets by 6 inches and seal seams with tape.
  4. Extend vapor barrier up crawl space walls by 6 inches.
  5. Seal around support posts and other penetrations.
  6. Use heavy objects or stakes to hold barrier in place.
  7. Install insulation over the vapor barrier on walls.
  8. Ensure proper drainage away from the foundation.

Pro Tips

  • Always install vapor barrier on the ground before insulating walls.
  • Ensure proper ventilation to prevent moisture buildup.
  • Consider sealing crawl space vents in cold climates.
  • Check local building codes for vapor barrier requirements.
